Together with our environmental justice community-based organization partners PODER, in the Mission/Excelsior of San Francisco; and YUCA, in East Palo Alto; we are working to develop a nationally replicable model for growing community power and the leadership of youth of color to shape public planning processes. Through Map Your Future, youth leaders of color are:
- Mapping the climate resilience assets and risks in their communities,
- Engaging in community-based participatory action research,
- Building stronger relationships with city planners and public agency staff volunteering as project advisors and participating in a youth mentorship program, and
- Developing maps, policy recommendations and organizing campaigns to create more equitable, healthy, livable and resilient communities.
We have been busy this summer developing a replicable mapping protocol (instructions), curriculum, a mapping app, community surveys, and youth workshops. We are honored and humbled to be working closely with PODER and YUCA, learning from youth leaders as we walk this path together.
