“Oh to be young again!” but these days it’s not easy being young. What do our youth and young adults have to look forward to? In the midst of the “jobless recovery,” young people face an unpromising job market with little hope of landing that first good job. Beyond that, youth know the world they are inheriting is in climate chaos trouble. Understandably, it can be hard for youth to feel hopeful about their futures.
We need a generation that sees clear career paths for themselves in building low-carbon communities that are resilient to climate change. Rooted in Resilience (formerly Bay Localize) seeks to strengthen its Map Your Future Project for youth to create these pathways so that we can make this vision real together. This year, we’re partnering with the San Francisco Department of the Environment (SF Environment), San Mateo County Health System, and two established community-based organizations with nationally recognized youth leadership development programs: People Organizing to Demand Environmental and Economic Rights (PODER) in San Francisco, and Youth United for Community Action (YUCA) in East Palo Alto.
